Our Ethos

At TROUT, sustainability isn’t our selling point – it’s our baseline. The minimum. Slow fashion, by design. We leave the greenwashing to fast fashion; we’re here for complete transparency.

We want you to know exactly how and where your clothes are made. From material sourcing to garment production, we trace our supply chain openly and honestly, because we have nothing to hide. That’s why we make our entire process visible; we may not always get it right, but we’re committed to learning, improving and holding ourselves to a higher standard with every collection.

For us, sustainability isn’t a feature, it’s a foundation: the structure that holds the TROUT brand up.

Our Process

Sustainability shapes our collections from the very beginning – a design process rooted in slow fashion rather than seasonal cycles. Rather than retrofitting our designs to chase a trend, we design around the most responsible options available. This means starting with an uncompromising search for better materials. We spend months researching and testing sustainable fabrics, working with ethically accredited providers who can trace each fibre back to its source. We study every detail – the weight, texture, how the fabrics move and feel against the skin – before selecting just two or three single-fibre fabrics for a collection. Only now does the design process begin: we build our collection adapting cuts, finishes and constructions to the characteristics of our carefully selected fabrics.

Our commitment isn’t limited to fabrics – we give the same attention to every seam and fastening, which also means minimising non-biodegradable components like zips and synthetic interfacing. Where functional needs make them unavoidable (as in some trousers), we’ve used recycled alternatives – and we’re exploring ways to eliminate them entirely. It’s not how most of the fashion industry works, but it’s how it needs to. By designing this way, we reduce waste, make recycling possible, and create collections that are built to last.

We source all materials exclusively within Europe to reduce transport emissions, ensure traceability and maintain high environmental and social standards. Our aim is to use 100% biodegradable fabrics wherever possible, and we design with simplicity and longevity in mind, favouring enduring styles over seasonal turnover.

Our pieces are produced in small, limited runs in Barcelona, just a short distance from our Mallorca studio where all prototypes and samples are developed in-house by us. We don’t follow fashion’s seasonal calendar or chase fleeting trends. Instead, we work slowly and deliberately, creating collections that are built to last, and keeping each and every last piece on sale until it goes to someone who will cherish it.

This is sustainable by design.

Our Materials

Our debut collection is made from just three core fabrics: organic cotton, linen, and viscose – all plant-based and 100% biodegradable. Every material has been carefully chosen for its environmental credentials, wearability and ability to age beautifully.

We’ve also worked hard to ensure that the components you don’t notice – like thread, interfacing, buttons, zips and labels – align with our values. Where fully biodegradable options weren’t available (as in the case of zips or metal fastenings), we’ve selected recycled or recyclable materials instead, always opting for the most responsible option available.

Organic Cotton

Grown without toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, organic cotton is better for the soil, the environment, and the farmers who grow it. Compared to conventional cotton, it uses significantly less water, avoids polluting chemicals, and supports healthier, more resilient ecosystems. It’s breathable, soft on the skin, and biodegradable – a natural fit for everyday essentials.

Linen

Made from flax, linen requires minimal water and no chemical input to grow. It’s one of the most sustainable fibres available and naturally biodegradable. Durable, breathable and elegant, it softens beautifully over time.

Viscose

Our viscose is sourced from responsibly managed forests and produced using closed-loop systems that reduce waste and environmental impact. Lightweight and fluid, it offers a graceful drape while staying fully biodegradable.

Every product page includes a full breakdown of material composition and origin, so you can trace exactly what you're wearing, and why it was chosen.
